Steps to Get Rid Of Pigeons in the Chimney
When pigeons enter your chimney, they can cause you a lot of stress. Even the pigeon that has got into your chimney is going to feel stressed and so the sooner you get it out, the better it is for everyone. Many times, pigeons enter the chimney and once they get in, they are unable to free themselves.
Be patient and keep quiet
It is important that you learn how to free the trapped pigeon. Remember, that it pays to be patient and you also need to maintain quietness in order to coax the pigeon out. Here is a look at the steps you need to take in order to deal with pigeons in the chimney.
Look for the trapped pigeon
Start by looking for the trapped pigeon. One option available to you when dealing with pigeons in the chimney is to open the fireplace damper. Next, take a large box and keep the open side facing up. Put this box in the fireplace opening and prop it on the fireplace grate so that there is about an inch between the box and the fireplace top.
Wait for the bird to enter the box
The third step involves pulling the box back ever so slightly so that you can put a torch inside which should be made to point up. Replace the box in its original position and then make sure there is no noise in the room. You will now have to patiently wait till the bird enters the box.
Gently remove the trapped bird
Now it is time to take a cardboard sheet which you need to slide over the opening of the box so that the bird is trapped within. Once the bird has been trapped inside the box, you can gently remove the box and then take it out where you can set the pigeon free.
Things you need
To get rid of the pigeon in the chimney, you need a large box that fits properly into the fireplace and you also need a stiff cardboard sheet that is of a size that is bigger than your box. You also need sheets and thumbtacks as well as a towel and broom.
When choosing the box, make sure it is of the right size to fit into the fireplace. Once the pigeon has been trapped inside the box, you should wait for it to stop flapping and scratching.
Last but not least, you need to keep in mind that if there are baby pigeons in the chimney, then you probably won't need to complete the above-mentioned steps because as soon as they are able to fly, they will probably fly out of the chimney on their own. When cleaning the chimney, make sure you do not disturb the next because there are laws that protect these nests. If you do have to remove the nest, then it is best to call in a professional chimney sweep. Finally, once you have got rid of the pigeons, you should cap your chimney to make sure they do not come back again.
